Please find some basic planting guidance to grow a successful Vermont Backyard Kitchen Garden. Eat fresh, grow a garden!
These are the plants you sow directly into the soil:
Beans, Beets, Carrots, Corn, Cucumbers, Lettuces, Melons, Mesclun, Peas, Pumpkins, Radishes, Spinach, Squash, Swiss Chard, and Watermelons.
Always read the back of seed packs carefully!
These are the plants that need to be planted as starts: Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Celery, Eggplant, Fennel, Herbs, Kale, Kohlrabi, Melons, Okra, Parsley, Peppers, Strawberries, and Tomatoes.
I use 4 foot standard shop lights to start young seedlings. Then before planting outside great care must to taken to “harden up” the starts. Most folks are best served buying starts at local nurseries. Their plants have been hardened and are ready to plant end of May / early June in Vermont.
These are the plants you plant in the soil as roots or bulbs: Asparagus, Garlic, Horseradish, Onions, Leeks, Potato, Shallot
